technology.timesonline.co.uk -  Recent efforts by some US internet providers to measure and control how much bandwidth individual customers use – and bill them accordingly – have drawn a predictable chorus of protests from some corners of the internet world.

There is, first off, a suspicion that such metering and monitoring schemes are really aimed at shutting off file-sharing services that traffic in pirated music and video. Internet service providers shouldn't be in the business of saying whose traffic is OK and whose isn't, critics say, and the cable firm Comcast in particular has taken a lot heat for allegedly targeting the BitTorrent video service.

Then there are the more general complaints: metered service will slow the growth of online audio and video and much else; it's a throwback to the early days of when web access was billed by the hour, and people hated it; the internet is all about getting things free, dammit, how dare those cable companies try to charge more money!
